Before settling in what is now Crikvenica, the people of Crikvenica lived in the settlement of Kotor, located on a nearby hill and first mentioned in the 13th century. The parish of Kotor was part of the medieval town of Grižane, and its inhabitants were very religious, as evidenced by the numerous churches and associated brotherhoods (St. Simon, Holy Trinity, Holy Body, St. Mary, St. George, and St. Nicholas).
In 1776, a devastating fire destroyed Kotor, leading most of its population to relocate towards the coast.
