Goli otok
Goli Otok is a small island in the Adriatic Sea, located near the Croatian coast, not far from the island of Rab. It is known for having been used as a political prison during socialist Yugoslavia, where people who were opponents of the regime, including intellectuals, dissidents, and former partisans, were imprisoned.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Goli Otok became a symbol of repression and brutality. Prisoners were forced to perform hard physical labor, endure torture, and live in exhausting conditions. Although conditions on the island were extremely harsh, Goli Otok also became a symbol of the fight for human rights and freedom.
After the prison was closed in 1988, Goli Otok was abandoned. While most of the buildings on the island have decayed, it still attracts visitors who wish to learn more about the history of political persecution during that time.
